The main basilica roof is finished and looks beautiful! With the extra money and outstanding pledge commitments, and ongoing regular collection, we should have enough money to re-roof the other areas that don't currently match and are covered with aging black shingles. These were not part of the original contract of the main roof. They are the roofs along the back of the basilica that have shingles that are old and black and do not match our Spanish clay tile. The project will utilize the old tiles that were still in good shape and removed from our basilica roof at the onset of phase I. By using these tiles we will avoid the cost of having to purchase new tiles. The estimated cost is $34,000.
The second phase of our roofing project is underway and almost half done! The workers have been here since the weather has improved and are currently removing old black shingles and replacing with the clay tiles.
The second phase of our roofing project is complete!
The third phase of our roofing project is in progress. This includes reparations of the plastering that is warped, cracked, and falling off the wall due to water damage from the old leaking roof. The damaged areas being restored include the gallery and the winter chapel.
BASILICA ROOF PROJECT
Due to leaking and damage, it has become necessary that our roof on the basilica be replaced and restored to its original beauty. The Basilica of St Michael the Archangel will replace its damaged roof with Spanish clay tile – as is presently on the roof. The color will be “Summer Rose” which most closely resembles the color of the original tile. This product will be secured from the Ludowici Company of Ohio, who supplied the clay tile for the original roof in 1901. C & D Waterproofing from Bloomsburg, PA will be awarded the roofing contract. We anticipate a cost of over $300,000.
